WOOOOOOOOOOO!!! Jameela Jamil – what a breath of fresh air. She is my FIRST. EVER. FAN-WOMANING-FRIYAY! She literally inspired me to set up this flipping blog and associated twitter/instagram and I’m gonna tell you why…
About a month ago, I was seriously lacking in motivation – I kept putting off work and doing things I wanted to do. I was comparing myself to other researchers or psychologists or instagrammers and feeling there was no way I could be ‘that good’. I wanted to post certain things, talk about certain issues but I wasn’t. I also presented at a conference and, upon receiving the feedback someone had rated my presentation as ‘poor’ (around 30 others had not rated it as poor but OBVIOUSLY I didn’t focus on the positives!!)…In search of some confidence and motivation I decided to search for ‘motivation’ and ‘podcasts’…I had a long commute and some time to kill…and that’s when I found the ‘School of Greatness’ podcast interviewing Jameela Jamil (you can find it here… https://lewishowes.com/podcast/jameela-jamil-be-courageous-by-being-you/ ) You should go listen! And podcasts are LIFE!!
The main things I took away from the podcast were: As a society we LOVE shame!! Like, its addictive. Women especially, are taught to be ashamed. Jameela talked about feeling shame around being a woman, being a brown woman, shame around her body and body image. She talked about how she had spent years in therapy unpicking each part of the shame she had been taught, and then putting herself back together as someone who doesn’t feel shame! Can you imagine?! NOT feeling shame??!! – Freeing, right? This has allowed her to speak out without fear of shame or getting things wrong, or having to be perfect. And where needed she listens, learns and grows. She also started the movement i-weigh which encourages people to post about all the things they are other than their weight! I saw one of my friends post an i-weigh ages ago and I didn’t do it – BECAUSE I FELT ASHAMED THAT IT MIGHT SEEM BOASTFUL (OMG – sooooo many things to unpack there, but this is just one blog…)
And so, after listening to the podcast I decided – ‘fuck it!’ I’m gonna start @mamafeminologist…I’m gonna talk about issues that are important to me about gender, inequality, feminism, intersectionality, motherhood and mental health. And I’m gonna do a fucking i-weigh post! If you wanna, you should to! Let’s all be a little more Jameela and be-courageous-by-being-us!
HAPPY FRIYAY Y’ALL ❤ ❤ ❤
