WOOOOOP! Fan-Womaning Friyay is upon us again!
This week’s Fan-womaning Friday goes out to Candice Brathwaite!! – probably you’re already following her because she is just so 2019 – just nailing it!
Ways that she’s nailing it:
- She is unapologetic about wanting to make the money!
Right – this may seem like a sort of material, superficial thing, but believe me it is not. When we don’t negotiate higher salaries, when we don’t charge for our time, we are not seeing our worth. Candice see’s her worth and she unashamedly talks openly about it – which is exactly what we need to hear, especially as women. Unfortunately money is power – it is the power to house, clothe, feed ourselves and our family independent of others. Candice talks about using the money she has made in order to put her kids in private school so that when her children face racism (which unfortunately they already have by the age of 5!!) she has leverage to demand the school does something about it (you can listen to her talk more about this on @clemmietelfords honestly podcast) – this is a sad but necessary state of affairs for her and her family. It’s not super fashionable to talk about money equalling happiness, but perhaps that because those who have it, don’t realise what it can and does buy for them – safety, security and privilege
- She tells it like it is
She’s not holding back – sometimes her way of speaking so unapologetically makes me uncomfortable – and you know what – that’s because I’ve been taught that as a woman I should be quiet and contained and not get angry and not get pissed off, and not laugh to loudly and to make myself small and apologise when I say something that might offend someone else – or not even offend, just put someone else out a tiny little bit – well FUCK THAT SHIT! I am taking this woman as my role model! I wanna #bemorecandice – I need her in my life (even if it is only through the medium of Instagram)
- She has OPENED MY EYES
She talks about what is like to be a black person in the UK. She talks about how as white people, with white privilege we need to OPEN OUR MOUTHS AND SPEAK UP when we see racism – call it out. She is on BBC talking about the fact that black women are 50% more likely to die in childbirth than white women! She talks about the fear she faced when she found out she was having a son – given the statistics of growing up as a black boy in London. She set up @makemotherhooddiverse which aims to challenge the single story of motherhood. She has inspired me to take a look at and examine my own prejudices and whether I do enough work on them, and enough work with my privilege – something that I will continue to do.
So, If you’re a white person who doesn’t even think about race and racism then you NEED Candice in your life. You can follow her on Instagram (@candicebrathwait) as a start, and then you can do your own work on, and with, your privilege too!
Happy Fan-Womaning Friyay all!
